The Anibros were graciously invited to return to The World in Review, a podcast of society and culture. Our first appearance on this program was years ago, and it was great catching up with Ira Pass and taking a look at how much the world of anime, and by extension, ourselves have changed.
It’s not a Magna, but it’ll have to do.
Please enjoy this insightful interview brought to you in part by Jaker’s Anime Emporium and listeners like you.
Kumoricon has come and gone once again, and what have we learned? Not only is it the most fun an anime fan can legally have in Oregon, but it’s the best place to find industry guests, fan panels, karaoke, cosplay, gaming, and much more. The Anibros and Sons found themselves getting up to all sorts of hijinks at the convention center, and now the Good Patrick is here to help set the record straight on what really happened there on that fateful weekend.
Wesley crushing Anime Jeopardy: The Midnight Run
Don’t miss this discussion our favorite memories of the con as well as the technical feat known as the glomp circle.
You know the old saying: while the cat is away the mice will play! By “cat” I mean Laven, and by “play” I mean talk about Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure! Just as the obsession is starting to wane, Jack finally finds someone to talk with about Araki’s gift to mankind. This person is… Willis?! Although he has only just finished the sixth part of Jojo, he is more than happy to make a triumphant return to the Anibros fold!
Not pictured: Vampire Jojo, Mafia Jojo, Inmate Jojo.
The conversation weaves from Phantom Blood through Stone Ocean and everything in between, so minor spoilers for those parts.
In a move that surprises no one at this point, the Anibros finally let the kettle boil over and dedicate an entire episode to their favorite works produced by studio Gainax! Joining the dynamic duo is Laven’s cousin Kenny, who we last heard from over three years ago on episode 50 of this fine podcast. Time sure flies, doesn’t it?
Too bad this isn’t an animated gif or we could have had some of that signature Gainax bounce.
Whether you’re looking for recommendations for new anime to watch or you’ve already been crowned the Otaking, please enjoy our discussion of our favorite Gainax anime.
Kicking it old school with another late 1980s OVA, we find out what happens when you supply officers of the law with combat vehicles. This podcast unpacks the important questions posed by Dominion Tank Police: can too many explosions be a bad thing? The beginning of Fate/stay night is also touched on before we get sidetracked into looking at some top 10 anime lists trying to prove whether or not popular opinion can be trusted.
There’s no I in TANK!
Our producer said we’re spending too much time reading your comments on the air but we’re not afraid of him. If you want to leave your thoughts on this episode we’ll make sure they’re kept safe in the mailbag until next time.
Welcome, let’s get down to business! In this episode Laven reveals what really happened during his most recent jaunt in Japan. Then Jack talks about what anime he’s watched recently, including but not limited to Sakura Quest, KonoSuba, Love Live! Sunshine!!, Sound of the Sky, Diebuster, Bananya, and BanG Dream! There’s even some time left over to take a look at some anime news!
Hot take: Aqua is an “unredeemable, terrible terrible girl.” Precious followers speak now or forever hold your peace!
Keep scrolling past the break to see the photographs from the Japan trip referenced in the podcast. Don’t get into legal trouble while in a foreign country!
It’s been a hot minute but now we’re back to discuss Sakura-Con 2017! The Good Patrick joined us to celebrate Sakura-Con’s 20th year anniversary and what a wild ride it was. Despite the lack of an Anime Jeopardy panel, there was more than enough fun to be had at the oldest and largest anime convention in the northwest.
Good Patrick surveys a brave new world.
Please be sure to listen until the end to hear some incredible advertisements for the convention brought to you by Doctor Pat, who holds a PhD in anime marketing!
Face front, true believers! In this episode the Anibros work through some family matters in the smallest corner of anitwitter before bringing you an important news bulletin and lending a sympathetic ear in the first edition of our newly syndicated advice column. All this plus an update on what anime we’ve ingested since the last time we rapped, culminating in our review of Your Name.
Relationship status: it’s complicated.
In the interest of fairness, I will disclose here that this episode may contain plot details for Your Name that could be considered spoilers. But even if you haven’t seen the film, please listen to this episode because you still get almost an hour of content before we get into spoilers. And if you HAVE seen the film, you have no excuse: listening is mandatory.
Do you want to learn Japanese? This is the episode you’ve been waiting for! Our guest this time is Jennifer, a Japanese to English translator and administrator of Japanese Talk Online. She brings loads of tips on studying Japanese and we put a modicum of effort into staying on topic long enough to discuss them. しょうがないわね…
Be careful when choosing a Japanese instructor, as not all teachers are created equal.
Get this— if you knew Japanese, nothing could stop you from watching all the anime you wanted! Not even your real-life responsibilities!
As red-blooded American males, we just can’t get enough romance stories. That’s why in this episode we decide to review the greatest love story ever told: Toradora! Thanks to these meddling kids we had to feel emotions and stuff. We laughed, we cried, it was better than Cats!
Let’s put a smile on that face!
When you’re dealing with the palmtop tiger don’t forget one thing: a good supply of bodybags.
